Todos los padres esperan con impaciencia el día en el que escuchen por primera vez la primera palabra de su hijo pero, ¿y si esto no ocurre? “¿Tú crees que terminará hablando?”.
Una pregunta que seguro que todos los padres de niños con autismo se la han hecho alguna vez y a la que los profesionales nunca podemos responder.
Mentiríamos si les dijésemos a unos padres que su niño con autismo va a hablar y también lo haríamos si les dijéramos que no.
Nadie lo puede saber. Puede que termine hablando o puede que no. Puede que desarrolle el habla finalmente si se empieza a intervenir lo más pronto posible y se le ofrece una experiencia comunicativa que así lo permita, como la implementación de un sistema de comunicación aumentativo, (signos o PECS), pero esto no garantiza que el niño termine hablando.
Sí que es cierto que estos sistemas de comunicación facilitan que se desarrolle el habla pero hay que tener en cuenta que si un niño con autismo está “diseñado” para hablar, terminará hablando, con o sin sistema, porque su modo de comunicación será ese.
En cambio, si un niño con TEA no termina hablando es porque no está “hecho” para ello, ya sea porque no se siente cómodo con este modo de comunicación, (el habla), y necesite hacerlo de otras maneras, o porque no se hayan puesto en marcha los mecanismos del habla y no le toque hablar, porque aunque tenga la habilidad para hablar, (no hay ningún daño físico que lo impida), no puede acceder al lenguaje.
Sea lo que sea, es importante que nunca se pierda la esperanza; no tirar la toalla en momentos difíciles y pensar que si tiene que hablar es porque así debe ser.
La intervención temprana en niños con autismo es crucial.
Hablarle a un bebé desde el nacimiento, cantarle, responder a sus balbuceos,… toda estimulación del lenguaje en estas etapas favorece su desarrollo y hay que intervenir lo más pronto posible para aprovechar el máximo rendimiento de sus habilidades comunicativas.
