En Brasil, la historia de superación de Rafael, un niño con trastorno de espectro autista, ha cautivado a la comunidad internacional.
Durante sus dos primeros años de vida, el menor no daba signos de que podía hablar ni comunicarse de alguna forma. Sus padres pensaban que había nacido sordo. Sin embargo, hoy tiene 7 años y ya conoce más de 9 idiomas.
Juli Lanser Mayer, madre de Rafael, llevó a su bebé de entonces 2 años al neuropediatra. Este le diagnosticó un autismo severo. Intentó buscar otras opiniones médicas y tres de ellas le dijeron lo mismo.
Mientras los días de su crecimiento pasaban, sus padres se preguntaban qué podría hacer para que su hijo se desarrolle y socialice en el ‘mundo exterior’ si no tenían la certeza de que en algún momento iba a hablar.
“Mis otros hijos se desarrollaron rápidamente, pero Rafael tardó hasta en aprender a sentarse cuando era pequeño. Hasta los 2 años, no interactuó, no miraba a los ojos y parecía estar sordo. Le hicimos exámenes que arrojaron que no tenía problemas de audición”, dice Juli Lancer Mayer a la cadena BBC NewsBrasil.
Lo llevaron a varios terapeutas para que puedan ayudarlo a poder comunicarse pese a las dificultades del autismo, pero los métodos no solucionaban nada.
La madre cuenta que le recomendaron que le dé una tablet al niño como una forma de ‘terapia’. Ella y su esposo no estaban de acuerdo, pero como las opciones eran pocas, prefirieron hacerlo.
El aparato cambió la vida del niño. Se concentró tanto en los contenidos que veía que no sin imaginárselo aprendió el idioma en el que estaban originalmente los videos con los que interactuaba: el inglés.
“Me quedé preocupada porque, de repente, comenzó a hablar como si hablara el idioma con fluidez, sin haber recibido clases ni salido del país”, dijo la madre.
Para BBC News Brasil la madre de Rafael, Juli Lancer Mayer, contó que su hijo no hablaba otro idioma que no sea inglés, pese a que su lengua original es el portugués.
Decidieron, con la ayuda de una neuropsicóloga potenciar las habilidades del menor con autismo para que este pueda tener una mejor comunicación con sus padres.
Tatiana Schmidt, la profesional que trabajó con Rafael cuenta que fue el portugués el 4 idioma que el niño aprendió. Sin embargo, este se siente más cómodo con el inglés. Eso motivó a sus padres empezar a aprender dicha lengua para llegar más a su hijo.
“Esto puede ayudarlo mucho en el futuro. Debido a que el autismo es un trastorno sin cura, nuestra prioridad es que se desarrolle a través de sus capacidades”, dice el abogado.
Actualmente, Rafael aprende árabe. “Pero ahora le dejo jugar con los aparatos electrónicos solo dos horas al día, para que no esté totalmente enfocado en eso”, explica el papá.
La hiperconcentración
Una de las características del autismo es la hiperconcetración, capacidad que tienen las personas diagnosticadas con trastorno de espectro autista (TEA) y pueden mantener la concentración en un tema específico como idiomas, astronomía o música, sin distraerse con ninguna información.
