La terapia cognitivo conductual (TCC) basada en la familia es probablemente una intervención exitosa en los tratamientos de los desórdenes de ansiedad en niños con un desarrollo típico y niños con TEA y puede mejorar el desarrollo de las habilidades diarias.
TCC es un tratamiento paradigmático, en el que las nuevas habilidades se desarrollan a través de la motivación del niño y los padres con razonamientos lógicos y persuasivos y con un cuestionamiento socrático, desafiando las cogniciones irracionales que mantiene las conductas inadaptadas y de evitación, y practicando estas habilidades jerárquicamente en situaciones reales (en vivo).
Dada la importancia de las habilidades de la vida diaria en la población con TEA, el desarrollo de intervenciones eficaces para mejorar el funcionamiento es una gran prioridad.
Las técnicas de TCC basadas en la familia parecen producer estadísticamente u potencialmente ganancias clínicas en las habilidades de la vida diaria significativas entre los niños con TEA.
Los padres perciben que sus hijos con TEA que han recibido tratamiento eran capaces de realizar más habilidades de la vida diaria de manera independiente al final del tratamiento.
Facilitar la adquisición de las habilidades básicas apropiadas para la edad desde el comienzo, contribuye a una trayectoria que promueva más oportunidades para el funcionamiento independiente mientras los niños se desarrollan.
Los padres que recibieron el tratamiento reportaron haber reducido sus intrusiones en las tareas del cuidado personal de sus hijos, lo que les dio más tiempo para otras actividades y les permitió desengancharse del funcionamiento momento a momento de sus hijos.
