Según los autores, con frecuencia el autismo se describe como un trastorno en que todos los estímulos sensoriales invaden a la vez, de forma que la idea de que un neurotransmisor inhibidor fuera importante encajaba con las observaciones clínicas. Además, las personas autistas frecuentemente padecen convulsiones. Hay una comorbilidad del 20-25% entre autismo y epilepsia, y las convulsiones constituirían una excitación descontrolada del cerebro.
